What a successful year for SAA. We have seen students grow and reach new heights this year, starting with our choreography competition in October and ending with our whole school showcase in July.
WOW! What a year Southern arts have had in 2015/2016. We have reached new heights and have taken on challenges that we never expected to be able to achieve.
Our year started with a choreography competition that we held at Horndean Technology College and was exclusive to the students of Southern Arts. Students worked as solo artists, in duets or groups to choreograph their own dances in a variety of genres including: Tap, Ballet, Modern and Street Dance. The event allowed everybody to see the talent that Southern Arts Academy have and we hope to host another successful competion in the future.
In February 2016, our select 40 students who are in our West End group, headed to London to perfom in our annual show, this time hosted at the Adelphi Theatre, home to the hit west end show "Kinky Boots". We performed a collection of dances to over 1,500 spectators, which was a huge success. Our next West End show will be in June 2017 and will be held at the world renowned O2 Arena.
In May 2016, 9 students from our school travelled to Italy to compete in the IDF World Dance Championships, representing England. This was the second year SAA were chosen to be part of the elite England squad and this year was even more successful than the first. We entered 15 dances and returned home with 10 trophies ranking from 1st - 3rd place. The team competed against 2,000 other dancers from across the globe and to return home with over half of our dances placing in the Top 3 in the world is an amazing achievement for the school. The SAA England team trained an extra 10 hours a week on top on their usual 10 classes to learn, reherse and perfect their dances and the hard work paid off. Congratulations England Squad.
In July 2016, we had our annual showcase at Ferneham Hall in Fareham where 150 dancers from the academy took to the stage to perform ‘A Night At The Musicals’ We saw dances performed to music from shows such as: Mamma Mia, Footloose, Hairspray, Legally Blonde, Annie and many more. The show was a great success as always and everyone performed to a high standard. We couldn't be more proud of all the students at Southern Arts and we hope that the 2017 show will be just as successful. We also had 26 pupils who took their professional ISTD exams in July and we have recently found out they all passed with high marks so well done to all of you.
We then wrapped the year up with our 3 day summer school in August 2016 where the students were taught by April, Lloyd and Jess. They taught many classes in all genres and ended the 3 days with a showcase where all the students got to show how much they have learnt.
We hope that 2016/2017 will be just as successful as the last and we look forward to updating you all with more exciting news of our achievements in the future.
