Teacher - ISTD & BA (Hons) Choreography and Dance
We welcome Sarah as she joins us in February 2020 to teach the Primary & Grade 1 classes on a Saturday morning
Sarah started her dance training from a young age attending Victoria’s and Marie Clarke school of dance, studying ISTD Ballet, Tap and Modern. As well as formal dance training Sarah completed vocational training in the form of GCSE Dance and a BTEC National Diploma receiving A* grades at King Richard School of Performing Arts. Studying the foundations of contemporary dance and its practitioners such as Merce Cunningham, Rudolf Von Laban and Martha Graham etc..
Continuing her studies at South Down College Sarah received a Higher National Diploma in dance and was selected for the gifted and talented programme. The programme consisted of being part of Pivotal dance company working with Random dance company under Wayne McGregor; the lead choreographer for the Royal Ballet, performing and teaching workshops all over Hampshire and London. During her time at college Sarah also won Youth Dancer of England and performed her choreography at the Royal Opera house and attended a week long residential, training with the Royal Ballet company, Richard Alston and Wayne McGregor. This was the point in which she determined that although she loved performing she loved choreographing and teaching more. This was what made her decision to attend university rather than Laban. Although attending Laban would have been an amazing experience she didn’t want to take the place of a dancer who was wanting to perform opposed to Choreograph and teach.
Attending The university of Winchester, a teaching university, Sarah studied Choreography and Dance where she received a first-class BA (Hons) degree. Her dissertation piece focused on semiotics and how the audience can recognise tone and story through found movement and explore how accompaniment can evoke different emotive responses based on their own personal experiences.
After graduating Sarah worked as a freelance dance teacher across the south coast, teaching various genres of dance consisting of Ballet, Contemporary, Modern, Tap, and choreography techniques for private dance schools as well as within education as part of GCSE, A level and BTEC curriculum. Her roles were diverse covering a broad spectrum of syllabus's which were taught to children and adults preparing for ISTD and AQA exams.
Since having her son, she took a break from teaching and now works as a Content Marketing Specialist for Pall Corporation.
